HBBS Rifled 410 barrels for the TC Contender/G2 platform can now be referred to as the HBBS Rifled .410 Jr. It is the same outstanding performer it always has been but now it can be better recognized as the barrel for the lighter frames. Yes, you can shoot your favorite brand .410 slugs in them if you like. HBBS Brand 410 ammunition will perform better in them than any other ammunition we know of. Also remember, not all  HBBS 410 ammunition is of the highest power! You can load light loads and use them in any HBBS Rifled 410 barrel!

Important Development: September 30, 2011 will be the last day of the current special order procedure to obtain an HBBS Rifled 410 barrel for your Encore frame. The current procedure is much more cumbersome and slower than we like but it was the best alternative during its run. All customers on the current waiting list will be notified about their order status after that date.

New pages added to site, "Inspiration Behind HBBS", who and what started it and how it came to be. The "Funny Pages" take a light hearted look at some serious issues. What is the HBBS .410? What can it do? How powerful is it? "Legal issues" that are non issues and never were. Let's take some misinformed speculation and have fun with it. More spoofed newsletters, notices, bulletins and cartoons are planned.

On a serious note, Hoening Big Bore Slug LLC and Hoening Big Bore South, L.L.C. have been conservative in making claims about the performance of HBBS products. We have known much more than what has been presented here on line for the past four years. Our intentions have been to present for sale the best rifled .410 barrels available and the best .410 slug ammunition to go with them. We have encouraged shooters to work up their own loads if they are up to it in hopes that some one could better what we have done. We have the best shooting, cheapest, and easiest to load shotgun slugs around. People complain about the cost of our ammo for sale here and miss the point of it all. That point is you can load these yourself cheap, you do not have to buy some proprietary load from us or some other company, and you can load the best yourself!

For over ten years the hottest loads were in brass and still can be of course. Today the plastic loads are so powerful you have to ask yourself, "Do I really need brass loads?" I mention this because the HBBS .410 has always been more powerful than we have claimed publicly, we just did not release the information or the loads to back it up since HBBS 410 brass was not readily available. There are a few brass HBBS 2.5 inch hulls in circulation but very few that were made for testing. A few people have been lucky enough to get and use some of those. Because large scale manufacturing and sales of HBBS Brass has not happened as planned, plastic hull loads have developed to undreamed of levels and we plan to reveal just what that level is. In this area too, Hoening Big Bore Slug has had hotter loads than we have released publicly. One of our goals, the one where others work up new loads for our HBBS rifled barrel has been and continues to be met and in a terrific way. We hope to bring information on those loads to your attention. Here is the open invitation for all HBBS shooters and loaders to send in your comments and experience with HBBS products and your own loading efforts. It is time for all to see just what HBBS .410 can really do. Email your comments with permission to publish them. I encourage all users to post comments on web sites to put an end to some of the ridiculous speculation and misinformation out there.

This year's season is almost here, I hope you have a great one!

August 31, 2010 HBBS rifled 410 IS Allowable Hunting equipment for Ohio deer Hunting

I would like to thank, Kenneth J. Fitz for the way he handled answering the question "is the HBBS 410 allowable hunting equipment?" Kenneth took the time to consult with others in the ODNR, and studied the HBBS 410 in detail. He did not make a flash
decision, on the subject. Kenneth kept me informed as the ODNR made the determination, even took the time on a sunday afternoon to inform me of progress being made on the decision. Kenneth J. Fitz has our respect and is very dedicated to his job and service to the OHIO sportsman.
Now the OHIO deer hunter no longer needs to wonder if the HBBS 410 is legal to hunt deer with in Ohio and this should end the debate about is the HBBS 410 a shotgun or rifle. The HBBS 410 is a shotgun!!!

I will remind everyone metallic shotgun cases are not allowable hunting equipment in Ohio effective July 1, 2010 so do not use the HBBS 410 brass in Ohio, you will be in violation of the law!!! If you want this regulation changed contact the ODNR and make a proposal to make metallic shotgun cases legal. HBBS LLC would like the Ohio sportsman and the ODNR to determine if the metallic shotgun case regulation should be changed. Personally, I believe metallic cases should be legal and that no real argument could be made to ban its use in Ohio deer season. Banning a legitimate cartridge case for hunting deer just does not make sense. Metallic cartridges by themselves can not possibly be considered unlawful just because they happen to be metallic??? There is nothing not standard about a metallic shotgun case, they have been in use for over 100 years!!!

August 28, 2010 Important change in Ohio

Ohio deer hunting customers take notice - this may affect you!!!

One of the most asked questions HBBS LLC gets is , “ IS HBBS 410 ga ALLOWABLE HUNTING EQUIPMENT?” My answer to this has always been - contact the ODNR and review the current regulations on ALLOWABLE HUNTING EQUIPMENT.

As I was reviewing this year’s regulations, a rule new to me was found, effective July 1 2010, all metallic shotgun cases are now unlawful to be used during Ohio deer gun season!!! HBBS 410 ga. BRASS IS NOW UNLAWFUL in Ohio. If you can’t find this regulation in the current Ohio hunting guide book, you will need to search Ohio Administrative Code section 1501:31-15-11. I would advise everyone to review the Ohio Administrative codes, there may be other regulations there that you don't know about; being ignorant of the law is no excuse to violate it!!

HBBS LLC has contacted the ODNR about the metallic shotgun case regulation, I wanted to know how a standard metallic shotgun case could be used to break Ohio game laws???? No recorded answer to why the regulation was passed by the ODNR could be found. A speculative answer was given but since it was not supported by records I will not repeat it here. It is important that no recorded reason could be found, the regulation simply makes metallic shotgun cases unlawful without a reason. Possibly the ODNR will find a recorded reason behind the regulation and share it with HBBS LLC, if that happens I will let you all know. The question here is how can a standard shotgun hull, be used in a standard shotgun to violate a game regulation???????? Shotguns and shotgun slug ammunition are allowable hunting equipment. so why ban metallic shotgun cases?

Now we face the question is any HBBS LLC 410 ga. product allowable hunting equipment? I asked the ODNR this Question myself after finding that the metallic HBBS 410 brass cartridge was now unlawful. ODNR is now working on the answer!! When we receive the answer I will share that information with every one. As I understand the regulations on allowable hunting equipment, 410 ga. is legal and rifled barrels are legal, but that does not mean HBBS LLC rifled 410 is legal. I’m not sure how the ODNR interprets allowable hunting regulations or how the regulations could exclude HBBS LLC products from being legal, but given the fact ODNR has made HBBS LLC brass unlawful I can’t predict one way or the other if the HBBS 410 is allowable hunting equipment.

I’m making an effort to answer the question, “is the HBBS Rifled 410 ga legal or not for deer hunting in Ohio?” Hopefully, it will be allowed since it was built to allowable hunting specifications based on ODNR regulations prior to and including 2010 but there is simply no real way to judge what the ODNR may determine. ODNR may determine that the HBBS 410 is simply too good of a shotgun for Ohio deer hunters to use. They may determine some type of imagined conflict between the HBBS 410 and other game regulations. ODNR may ignore all the facts related to the HBBS 410 as being a rifled shotgun, SAAMI specifications and ATF regulations regarding rifled shotguns could be completely ignored. ODNR may claim HBBS 410 circumvents the no rifle rule in Ohio!!! My point is just because I designed the HBBS 410 by the rules does not mean ODNR will allow it!!! Like I said before we are now waiting for the OFFICIAL DETERMINATION.

I urge everyone interested in HBBS products, or anyone who owns HBBS products to contact the ODNR, Let them know you expect to be allowed to use a rifled 410. Rifled 410 has been legal for years even though no commercial manufacturer was producing a rifled 410 ga. Now that HBBS LLC is commercially selling a rifled 410 and ammo for that rifled 410, ODNR has issues???

Best Regards,

Ed Hoening
